Report: DOI computer system 'crashed'

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2002

A major Department of Interior computer system "crashed" due to ongoing problems stemming from a court-ordered shutdown, Natural Gas Week reports.

The publication cites industry sources who said the Minerals Management System has had serious technical problems dating back nearly a year. A spokesperson wouldn't confirm the crash but acknowledged glitches.

MMS carries out a number of trust related functions and underwent a "re-engineering" effort to respond to a federal court. The agency is about nine months behind schedule on its gas production data due to computer-related problems.

MMS was shut down last year in order to prevent hackers from breaking into Indian trust accounts.
