TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2002

A judge in Alaska ruled that the state's rural justice system does not discriminate against Alaska Natives.

A group of Alaska Native tribal governments and plaintiffs, including the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council, sued to make improvements in the rural justice system. They said law enforcement is slow to respond, lacks proper training and is ill-prepared to deal with problems.

An appeal is possible.
