Suit: Navajos told not to speak Navajo

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2002 The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an independent federal agency, has sued an Arizona restaurant over a policy which forbids Navajo employees from speaking Navajo. Steve Kidman, owner of RD's Drive-In, admits to the policy. But he said it was implemented because Navajo employees were making disparaging remarks about others in Navajo. The EEOC filed suit in federal district court in Arizona. The suit alleges two workers were fired and two more quit over the policy. The drive-in in question is located in Page, a non-Indian community next to the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona. Get the Story:
