THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2002

Arizona tribes have put gaming dollars to good uses not always seen by outsiders.

Hospitals, homes, scholarships, schools and infrastructure are among the most common improvements. "[Gaming] is one of the few economic programs that has actually worked," Gila River Gov. Donald Antone told The Arizona Republic.

Seventeen of the state's tribes have casinos. The notable exceptions are the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe.

The Hualapai Tribe tried gaming but closed down its rural casino because of lack of business.
