Janklow's Indian past questioned

Bill Janklow is running for South Dakota's only House of Representatives seat. The Sioux Falls Argus Leader takes a look at his past and present relationships with tribes and Indian people.

Janklow is often accused of anti-sovereignty. He has fought to reduce the boundaries of reservations in the state. He openly opposes tribal jurisdiction over non-Indians.

He started off his law career as a legal services aide on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. He was attorney general during the American Indian Movement days and prosecuted Indian activists.

He is vehemently oppose to any pardon or parole for AIM leader Leonard Peltier, convicted for the murder of two FBI agents.

Janklow is a Republican. His Democratic opponent is Stephanie Herseth.
