Critics of the federal recognition process in Connecticut are welcoming Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb's strategic reform plan.

Preston First Selectman Robert Congdon and North Stonington First Selectman Nicholas H. Mullane II said the plan finally addresses problems with the process. But they said it needs to go further and called for changes to the criteria used to evaluate petitioning groups.

The leaders, along with other Connecticut politicians, oppose the federal recognition of the historic Eastern Pequot Tribe.
