Russell Means: Elders asked me to run

MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2002

With his run for governor of New Mexico in the skids, Russell Means says he was called back home to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota for one reason: to change the Oglala Lakota Tribe.

Means says a group of elders and middle-aged tribal members asked him to run. His platform is impressive: he promises complete and public disclosure of all tribal funds, per capita distribution of casino revenues, a new tribal utility company, outside capital investment constitutional reform, taxation of non-Indians and a revamped hospital.

"I want South Dakota to be very proud of me instead of reviling me," he tells The Sioux Falls Argus Leader. "After I am long gone from the presidency, I want them to be able to point to me and say, 'See that man? He helped South Dakota.'"
