Author and filmmaker Sherman Alexie doesn't feel he has a "special mission toward Indians" except to portray them as human beings, he says in an interview for Sojourners.

Alexie's new film "The Business of Fancydancing" focuses on the return of a poet, who is gay, to the Spokane Reservation. Other characters include his white companion, a half-Jewish, half-Spokane woman who grew up off the reservation and the poet's old friend.

"All the characters are looking for some ideal of identity that doesn't exist," Alexie says.
