TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2002

The Yup'ik village of Emmonak has become a hotbed of criminal activity, according to reports in The Anchorage Daily News.

In recent months, two different sets of bootleggers have been busted for using the postal service to smuggle in massive quantities of vodka and other spirits. Owners of a local restaurant were arrested in early October and $11,499.74 in cash and approximately 400 bottles of liquor -- which can fetch up to $150 -- were seized.

A family of three was also arrested for trading marijuana with local teens for subsistence berries.
