FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2002

Florida Governor Jeb Bush (R) pressured political appointees of his brother, President George Bush, to obtain favorable government rulings on behalf of liquor company Bacardi Rum, The Washington Post reports.

In response to a freedom of information request, Jeb Bush released documents yesterday that detailed a lobbying effort spurred on by a Bacardi executive who accused the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) of being unfair. The campaign resulted in the removal of a government lawyer who wrote a negative decision regarding the company's trademark battle.

The effort coincided with Bacardi contributing $60,000 to the Republican Party.
