Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills was the keynote speaker at a rural health conference in South Dakota on Thursday.

Mills said rural communities must embrace diversity, including tribes and Native Americans. He recounted his battle against stereotypes due to his Oglala Lakota Sioux heritage.

Mills won the gold medal for the 10,000-meter run in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He is the only American to have won the event.
