TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2002

A federal magistrate in Oregon today agreed to let four Pacific Northwest tribes appeal his decision to turn Kennewick Man over to scientists.

The tribes sought an appeal independent of the federal government, which has until next week to decide whether to challenge Judge John Jelderks' ruling. On August 30, Jelderks overturned a Clinton administration decision to repatriate the remains.

The tribes that are appealing are: the Confederated Umatilla Tribes of Oregon, the Colville Tribes of Oregon, Yakama Nation of Washington, the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho
