Bill exempts Pentagon from eagle law

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2002

A bill near approval in a joint House-Senate committee exempts the Department of Defense from a law protecting eagles, The Washington Post reports.

The 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act is one of two major laws that protects eagles. The act also sets out agreements with Canada, Mexico, Japan and Russia for the management and conservation of various bird species.

If the bill becomes law, the Pentagon will gain a permanent exemption from the act but will be required to identify ways to limit impacts to migratory birds.
