Story of Navajo girls team a hot item

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2002 The story of a Navajo girls champion basketball team in New Mexico is the subject of competing film productions and competing interests. "Rocks With Wings" by Rick Derby, a documentary filmmaker from New York, will debut on PBS on December 11. His film about the Shiprock High School Lady Chieftains and their coach won an HBO award and has been shown at a number of film festivals. But a Utah company is producing a rival movie for the Showtime cable network. It is tentatively titled "Shiprock," according to The Farmington Daily-Times. But Derby and Norman Brown, a Navajo filmmaker and consultant, say the Showtime production distorts the facts. A local Navajo leader also opposes the film. Get the Story:
