Letter: Whitey ain't helping the Indians

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2002 "Culture works against the ... economic development tribes need . . there's no history, no tradition of working. That's partly because there haven't been any jobs. It's also partly because of the way whites have set up reservations." So reads an Argus Leader editorial on tribal economies. Once again, our culture is blamed for our sad lot. Once again, the issue is painted in racial tones. In other words, the traditional culture makes us lazy, and whitey ain't helping. The Argus Leader fancies itself as some Indian champion, so this is not surprising, but it detours us from the problem. Get the Story:
