FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2002

Paul Wellstone, one of the Senate's leading liberals and a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, was killed in a plane crash in Minnesota on Friday along with his wife, daughter, three staff members and two pilots.

Wellstone, a Democrat, was 58.

Wellstone was seeking a third term in the Senate. It is unclear what the Democrat Party, with its slim majority in the chamber, would do to replace him in the upcoming November 5 election.

Wellstone was known for championing the environment, social programs and the disadvantaged.
