GOP control impacts Indian affairs

Republican control of the Senate returns chairmanships of legislative committees back to the controlling party.

For Indian Country, that means Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) would replace Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) as head of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. The change isn't likely to make a major impact as the panel has typically been run in a bipartisan fashion and the chair and vice-chair take turns presiding over hearings.

Also affecting Indian affairs is a change for the Senate Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Department of Interior. Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), the ranking member has been elected governor of Alaska, so another Republican would take the chairman's seat from Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.).

The House remains in GOP control.
