The Suquamish Tribe has agreed to a land swap with the state and a conservation organization that will allow tribal members access to shellfish.

The tribe will purchase 19.5 acres of tidelands in front of its tribal headquarters for $35,000. The Bainbridge Island Land Trust will transfer the land to the state, which will hold it for the benefit of the tribe, The Seattle Times reported.

Without the land, Suquamish executive director Wayne George told the paper it is "like owning the house but not the front yard."

It's not clear from the article whether the tribe will ask for the federal government to take the land into trust.
