Mont. tribes up for Harvard award

The Fort Peck Tribes of Montana and a local county are semi-finalists i in a governance awards program sponsored by Harvard University.

The Assiniboine and Sioux tribes and Roosevelt County have signed a cross-deputization agreement to cover law enforcement. They are able to respond to police calls, regardless of the race of the persons involved.

The tribes and county are one of 99 semi-finalists in the Innovations in American Government Awards. Winning carries a $100,000 award.

The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska was the first tribal government to win the award. Its economic development corporation, Ho-Chunk Inc., was selected last year.

Ho-Chunk Inc. owns Indianz.Com and AllNative.Com.
