Jerry Haney has been officially recognized as the principal chief of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb on November 29 wrote a letter to Haney on the matter. McCaleb also said he recognized the tribal council except for bands representing descendants of African slaves.

Haney in response said he is working with two Freedmen bands to ensure their status. The Bruner Band and the Dosar Barkus Band have until December 20 to show their representatives were properly elected.
