The central Arctic caribou herd in Alaska has grown size over the past two years, Petroleum News Alaska reports.

A photo survey conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game shows the herd at 31,857, up from 27,128 in 2000.

The herd is not the same as the Porcupine caribou herd that migrates in and around the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But supporters or drilling say the central herd, which migrates around oil fields, shows that development and the environment can co-exist.
