The Billings Gazette in an editorial today says the state of Montana must pay more attention to Indian children in light of Census figures released that show an undercount.

"These kids are more likely to live in poverty, more likely to wind up in foster care and more likely to drop out before completing high school," the paper writes. "These youngsters deserve better opportunities to succeed in life, opportunities to change the grim statistics."

The Census Bureau, under court order, released adjusted figures of the 2000 count. They showed that 6.6 percent of children undercounted were Indian.
