Troubled Lott faces leadership challenge

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2002

Update: Senator Trent Lott stepped down as majority leader today.

Senator Bill Frist (R-Tennessee), a close ally of President Bush, on Thursday said he would challenge Trent Lott for the Senate majority leader position.

Lott is under fire for remarks he made that appeared to embrace segregation. He has apologized profusely but said he won't step down even as his own party member question his ability to lead.

Frist's announcement immediately drew supporters but Lott has those as well. A January 6 vote among Republicans will resolve the issue.
