Two Alaska Native tribes have filed a lawsuit against the state alleging mistreatment of Native children in foster care system.

The Ekwok and Curyung tribes said the state isn't doing enough to place children in Native foster families. They also accused the state of violating the Indian Child Welfare Act.

The suit seeks the creation of an oversight panel to fix the system.

Native children are 25 percent of the youth population but 60 percent of the foster care population, according to the state Division of Family and Youth Services.
