Tribe to tear down housing for casino

MONDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2002 The Stillaguamish Tribe of Washington is moving forward with plans to tear down a housing development for a casino. The tribe is compensating the affected tribal members by either buying their houses or offering them houses elsewhere. For that reason, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which helped fund the project, won't interfere. HUD believes the tribe should apply for a land-use change because the 20-acre site will be used for a casino. But the Bureau of Indian Affairs said that's not necessary. There is local opposition to the casino. Tribal director Eddie Goodridge Jr. and his family received a death threat, The Everett Herald reported. Get the Story:
