WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2003

Senator Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) surprised Democrats and close associates on Tuesday when he announced he would not seek his party's presidential nomination in 2004.

Daschle was considered a front-runner for the race. Currently, the field includes Rep. Dick Gephardt (D-Missouri), Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), John Edwards (D-N.C.) and outgoing Vermont Gov. Howard Dean. Sen. Lieberman (D-Conn.), the 2000 vice-presidential candidate, is expected to enter the running soon, according to news accounts.
