Democrats to fight Pickering nomination
THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2003

Democrats in the Senate are promising to defeat a Bush judicial nominee they say has a poor record on civil rights.

Charles W. Pickering is a federal judge in Mississippi. President Bush renominated him to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has been negative to tribes in Texas and Louisiana in recent years.

Pickering is a close friend of Sen. Trent Lott (R-Mississippi), the former majority leader who resigned that post last month amid a civil rights controversy.

Other judges Bush has nominated include John G. Roberts Jr. for the D.C Circuit Court of Appeals. Roberts fought Alaska Native sovereignty at the Supreme Court and won and defended Native Hawaiian rights and lost.
