Efforts to get rid of the Navajo Nation's three-branch government are supported by the incoming political leadership.

President-elect Joe Shirley said he supports getting rid of the system because he said it weakens the powers of the presidency. He helped implement the three-branch government after former president Peter MacDonald was ousted in the late 1980s.

MacDonald's daughter, Hope MacDonald-Lonetree, is also calling for the end of the three branches, The Farmington Daily-Times reported. She is a newly-elected delegate the Navajo Nation council.
