Project gives tribes more control over language

Washington state educators are reviewing a pilot project that would give tribes the ability to certify who can teach their languages.

Currently, language instructors must be certified by the state but aren't paid as much as teachers. They also must be supervised by a state-certified teacher and can't run a classroom on their own.

A three-year pilot would change that by recognizing the right of tribes to develop their own language programs and certify qualified teachers. The state would still have final approval but the project allows for more tribal input.
