Letter: Another broken promise to tribe

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2003

"It appears that Xcel Energy and our legislators are once again in a position to either honor or discard promises made to First Nation people. Xcel wants to store more nuclear waste next door to the Mdewakanton Dakota community on Prairie Island. The Prairie Island Dakota would like to have some say about whether this happens.

The last time this issue came up, in 1994, promises were made. The chief executive officer of Northern States Power promised Minnesota legislators that if they permitted 17 outdoor storage casks for nuclear waste on Prairie Island, he would never again ask the Legislature to allow additional casks. The Legislature gave permission for 17 casks, and gave a promise to the Prairie Island Dakota community that the community had the legal standing to reject any additional radioactive waste storage."
