Chad Smith, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, is running for re-election.

Smith announced his bid yesterday and said he will have a new running mate. Joe Grayson Jr. will replace Hasting Shade on the upcoming ticket.

No one has declared an opposition campaign but supporters of former chief Joe Byrd, a controversial figure, are urging him to run, The Tahlequah Daily Press reported.

Smith defeated Byrd in 1999.
