A Montana legislative committee held a hearing on Monday to address a bill that would give school districts with more than 50 percent Indian students the option to give hiring preference to Indians.

The preference would apply to teacher and administrator positions but not to the superintendent, district clerk or appointees. According to the bill's sponsor, Rep. Carol Juneau, 10 percent of school districts would be affected.
