Judge calls ex-BIA employee 'disgrace' to tribe

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2003 A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced a former Bureau of Indian Affairs employee to 18 months in jail for rigging government contracts. Stephen J. Calvin, a member of the Navajo Nation, pleaded guilty to manipulating the bidding process so his son-in-law could win the contracts. He apologized in court for his actions but was rebuked by the judge for saying he was following Navajo tradition by helping out his clan and family. "You've disgraced your tribe," the judge said, The Albuquerque Journal reported. "You've disgraced your family." Get the Story:
