THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2003

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a confirmation hearing on February 12 for Department of Interior nominee Ross Swimmer.

Swimmer has been nominated as Special Trustee for American Indians, a post created by Congress to fix the broken trust fund. He was assistant secretary for Indian affairs during the last three years of the Reagan administration and currently works on trust reform efforts at the Interior.

Many tribal leaders opposed Swimmer during his earlier tenure at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The National Congress of American Indians, which represents more than 200 tribes, has a resolution opposing his presence at the department.
