FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2003 Montana's Indian children have the higher death rate in the state, according to state statistics. Native children are more than twice as likely to die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome than white children. The deaths can be prevented by putting infants to sleep on their backs and reducing the number of layers of clothes. Accidents, often alcohol related, and suicides are also high for Indian children.
