The traditional chiefs of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana worked all day on Thursday to quell growing tensions affecting the tribal government.

President Geri Small returned to work with a court order reinstating her. She had been suspended by the council for alleged mismanagement but contends it is personal attack because she is the tribe's first elected woman leader. Three of the five who voted against her are former presidents.

The chiefs met separately with Small and the tribal council to discuss the situation. They have asked Small to stay home today and also asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs law enforcement to leave tribal headquarters yesterday.
