Effort to open up Mont. hate crimes law rejected

American Indian lawmakers in Montana helped defeat a proposed change to the state's hate crimes law.

A Republican said he wanted to open up the law to apply to all Montana residents. But Indian and women lawmakers said it would have effectively eliminated hate crime protections.
