FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2003

Are basketball referees in Montana biased against Indian teams? Many in Indian Country, including a coach from the Crow Reservation, say yes, citing examples of what they consider unfair treatment on the court.

But others say no, like Squee Guardipee, an athletic director on the Blackfeet Reservation. He says people claim racism when they lose. The Crow coach has five state titles under his belt.

Two groups are meeting to address the concerns. One will consider how to improve the image of referees and the other is looking at issues like racism and poor sportsmanship.
