B.C. First Nations press forward with treaties

TUESDAY, MARCH 11, 2003 Although First Nations in British Columbia have to negotiate new treaties with the provincial government, Aboriginal leaders and federal officials say they are making progress. The B.C. government never negotiated treaties in the late 1800s as occurred in other provinces. Land claims, mineral rights and other issues remain outstanding. Only the Nisga'a Nation has been able to secure an agreement but it occurred outside the current treaty negotiating process. Get the Story:
