TUESDAY, MARCH 11, 2003

The Prairie Island Indian Community of Minnesota is negotiating with the operators of a nuclear waste facility next to the reservation but no agreement has been reached, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

A deal could involve land and monetary compensation but a spokesperson would not confirm the nature of the talks. Xcel Energy is seeking to expand its waste capabilities, a move the tribe opposes.

Lawmakers introduced a bill to allow more storage and compensate the tribe $2.5 million a year.
