The Trust for Public Lands is turning over the site of the bloody Bear River Massacre to the Northwest Band of the Shoshone Nation.

The 26-acre site in Idaho where Army forces attacked a Shoshone village on January 28, 1863, will be conveyed to the tribe, based in Utah, next month. The attack was portrayed as a battle even though women and children were killed. An estimated 250 to 380 died.
