Idaho tribal tobacco tax bill resurrected

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2003

Idaho lawmakers revived a bill to impose state cigarette sales tax on reservations.

The state's tribes all oppose the bill because they say it is an intrusion of sovereignty and will hurt their economies. They also say they are being unfairly targeted.

The bill had been killed last month but survived a 12-7 vote by the House Revenue and Taxation Committee yesterday. It will now go to the House floor.
