MONDAY, MARCH 17, 2003 Southern California tribes are using casino funds to buy important parcels of land. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians recently bought 2,836 acres of land for an undisclosed price. The tribe is hoping to have the land placed into trust. The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians bought 700 acres of a culturally significant site. The land was taken into trust but has been the subject of a battle because a utility company wants it condemned to make way for a power line. Other recent purchases include 950 acres by the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians, 740 acres by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and assorted parcels by the Morongo Band of Mission Indians.
