THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 2003

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals today upheld the legality of casino games offered by the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska.

A unanimous decision said the games fall in the Class II category and are thus legal in Nebraska without a gaming compact. The ruling relieves the tribe of fines from the National Indian Gaming Commission but also a contempt citation of the tribal council.

The tribe operates a tiny casino on its reservation.
