California tribes are meeting with the state to start gaming compact negotiations, the Associated Press reports.

Gov. Gray Davis (D) is looking to the tribes for $1.5 billion to patch up a budget deficit. Some tribal leaders initially rejected his proposal but about 25 tribes, some without casinos, reportedly started talks with the state yesterday.
