S.D. school district settles voter rights suit

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2003 A South Dakota school district has agreed to make changes to its school board elections in response to a lawsuit alleging violation of Indian voter rights. The American Civil Liberties Union filed the suit on behalf of three members of the Yankton Sioux Tribe who complained about the Wagner School Board elections. Instead of an "at-large" system, the district will change how candidates are chosen, move the polling place and keep the Indian community informed about elections. Get the Story:
