The Lumbee Tribe opposes a bill that forces resolution of federal status through the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a spokesperson said.

Rep. Chuck Taylor (R-N.C.), chairman of the House Interior Appropriations subcommittee and a member of the Congressional Native American Caucus, introduced the bill. It competes with another that would recognize the tribe outright.

Arlinda Locklear, a prominent Indian law practitioner and Lumbee tribal member, says Taylor's bill is meant to "derail" the full recognition bill.
