Former U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan died in a Washington, D.C., hospital on Wednesday of complications related to a ruptured appendix. The New York Democrat was 76.

The four-term senator, presidential adviser, U.S. ambassador and college professor was considered a great "thinker" in American politics. His views helped shape major policies, including welfare reform, federal spending, Social Security and national security.

Moynihan retired from the Senate in 2000.
