Tensions rise on Mohawk Reserve in Que.

TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 2003 Members of the Mohawk First Nation in Quebec, Canada, backed by traditional leaders, have erected a blockade on the only road leading into the reserve. The group is protesting the recognition of Grand Chief James Gabriel as the tribal leader, whom they say he doesn't represent them. They also oppose a new law enforcement agreement made without their consent and are seeking land claims talks. The Oka Reserve was the site of a three-month armed standoff with the government.
