Cherokee Tribe too busy to meet with Lumbees

THURSDAY, APRIL 3, 2003 The Eastern Band of Cherokees is too busy to meet with Lumbee tribal leaders, The Fayetteville Observer reports. Lumbee chairman Milton Hunt wrote the Cherokee Tribe nearly a month ago in hopes of opening up a dialogue. The Cherokee council responded that it was busy with an upcoming election and budget planning. Rep. Chuck Taylor (R), whose district includes the Cherokee Reservation, has introduced a bill that would affect the Lumbee Tribe's recognition effort. Hunt said the meeting wasn't called to necessarily address the concerns. Get the Story:
